Daemon : EXACTLY what i was trying to explain ... !;-)) if there is ONE and ONLY one thing to be learned here = all the guys who got cheated were deceived BECAUSE they had no clues about what IS REALITY of details (evil is in the details) from their counterpart ( White Goddess from Ghana , Ukraine girls needing few hundreds $ to leave the country as Customs regulation , Russian girls having no phone , etc ... etc ...) AND the ones you described are in NY (or wherever) because their sub-conscious ideas about a place is stronger their desire to find the truth about "good or not" (i am working exactly in this field , so sometimes it is quite hard to "understand' (read decipher) what is the reality of a spot compared to what is commonly thought about the spot !) the hardest peoples one can try this task are the ones coming from a "somewhere else" = on top of locals , they need to have a "very good justification" (no one like to say "this is a shit-hole and i am living in it "!) so Scamming is MAINLY about playing about the unknown of someone in order to use this unknown to get something ...
It works this scammed , it works with new-immigrants as well (when they believe the place they arrive in will be all the answer of their previous hardship ...)
as for the money in Russia or USA : we have to face the truth , in both country it is about 1 to 2 % who gets rich (rich for me is NOT to know anymore how much you have ... for some , it is plainly to feed the kids and to be able to buy a car with what left ...)
the ONLY difference : Middle-class : Under Putin (even if the guy is no saint) it went from nearly nothing to 13/14 % of populace (yes , off course , mainly in Moscow but you have to consider the size of country ) while in USA , th middle-class is shrinking into 2 different types = the ones who become richer (tiny few) the ones left with bills , overdraft , mortgage , tuition fees for the kids , etc ... ;-)) for an end : i have been working in Wall-Street for a few years ... so please , do not serve me with "we cannot take the numbers 100% accurate..." WS is mostly a temple of Profit made on Lies , misrepresentation and immoralities ! ;-))

Fred - I somewhat buy into your analysis except for one thing - the numbers that we se coming out of Russia, similiar to that in China cannot be taken with 100% certainty. I know way too many Russians who have left the Motherland over the last 10 years and who kiss the ground of the USA every day. Putin is killing the middle-class more so there than what is happening in the Western end of the world. The Gov't is as corrupt now as it was during the Cold War and the billionaires you speak of have their hands in more non-legit, than legit enterprises. Obviously oil is a key factor for Russia, but that money is locked to only a minor percentage of the population.
As for this internet thing - I agree 100 % with you. Few if any women from Russia are looking to get here via marriage. Student visas are really not that difficult. And once they are here, there are plenty of agencies that hook them up with an American in NYC for a Green Card.

Daemon : being an economic analyst by profession and passion , i wouldn't be so sure that the Eco-situation of Russia is any worse then the US one ;-)) at least , they do not have a pile of debts which could reach the moon , one on top of an other and all the way back ... ! ok , there is lots of FSU girls in NY , but EXACTLY like the scammed guys = they fall victims of their own unknown ! here we have 3 types of "FSU immigrants" 1° the ones who are sure anywhere would be better than their home country (contrasted situation : Ukraine, Belarus , Moldovia and Georgia = definitely better anywhere ; Russia and to a lesser degree Baltic Countries = more opportunities than in the best spot of the western world ) 2° the ones who have "some" clues that West has nothing to offer them , despite this , they want to test their luck (how many persons reach L.A.,every year, in order to become famous and how many wash dishes in lousy restaurant to make a living ?) 3° the ones who have NO illusions and knowledge of REAL situation = they know perfectly well that IF they would score ANY success in their own country = they would have to work , may be slightly more than in the west , but most of time to a greater success ... therefor it is much easier to try to "Scourge" any guys out of his money ...
so all in all , IF a beautiful girl , young , sexy , unmarried (meaning without a divorce or 2 on the record AND without kid(s) to be fed ) want to marry a foreigner + Need internet to find a suitable partner = very probably a kind of bitchy something who is looking for a "wallet on legs" or a glamorous life at someone expenses or a woman who is going to dump you as soon as she will have noticed "neighbor has a bigger car , pool , house , whatever ...
it is NOT millionaires in Moscow (more than in NY) it is Billionaires ... (1000 times a millionaire !) ;-))

Fred - but yet, they are all coming to NY illegally and winding up dancing in strip joints. So i wouldn't be so sure that they are not looking to leave Mother Russia. The economy there is worse than here. But I will agree that there are just as many millionaires or more in Moscow as in NYC.

NOT for everything ! i would say that "Male fantasies" about the place they are living play quite a role ! how many of us are believing they live in a perfect spot ? if you mix it with the "Unknown" of a foreign country where most have never been (but portrayed in medias as backward or any kind of nice names ) then the scammers have a road wide open (make it a highway !) to get gullible money ... ;-)) i have been working for some time in Russia : high profile chicks are not in anymore for going West ... unless they want to have a career in modeling or the like ; they can get plenty of guys suited their needs home ! ( "there is more Billionaires in Moscow alone than in USA" so they say , i only know it true in comparison to New York , may be it is the whole of USA ?) so , very pretty , sexy , young , unmarried having desire to immigrate to a foreign country and therefor in need of such a lousy lottery as internet to find a suitable partner = TOO MANY CONDITIONS to be plausible (automatically !) ;-))

steeve : you're perfectly right ! i would dare to say that such a sexy , young , unmarried girl have about 0 chance to get a visa from any western embassies ... at least IF you are not asking it together (you physically present) , with a ton of proof you know each other for quite some time and any form of guarantee that she will go back or get married with you in less than 6 months !

3 years is long for a scammer to continue without asking for money. Though I don't know the full story (did he send her money during the 3 year period thinking he was supporting his "girlfriend"?) Fred is right, why during the first 3 years didn't you propose to meet her in NN? I would have done it within the first 3 months. Nobody like this would go to Canada for a "vacation". She would be denied a visa most likely from the Canadian Embassy. Even so, I would never invite a woman to my country without first meeting her in person in her country. She could be an axe-murderer.
